Assessment

Assessment at Chughtai International

At Chughtai International School, assessment in the early years is gentle, meaningful and deeply child centered. We understand that young children learn best through play, exploration, relationships and curiosity. Our assessment practices honor these natural ways of learning and respect each child’s individual pace, personality and developmental journey.
Assessment at Chughtai International is not about tests, grades or comparisons. It is about understanding how a child thinks, communicates, feels and grows. Thoughtful assessment helps teachers design rich learning experiences, supports children in recognizing their own progress and gives families a clear and reassuring picture of their child’s development across cognitive, social, emotional, physical and language domains.

Our Approach to Assessment

Assessment at Chughtai International is guided by four closely connected practices that work together to support learning

Assessing

We discover what children know, understand and can do through developmentally appropriate observation, play, conversation and hands-on exploration.

Recording

Educators collect and analyze evidence of learning over time using learning stories, portfolios, checklists, photographs and anecdotal records.

Reporting

Learning progress is shared with families through conferences, written reports and samples of children’s work, offering clarity and continuity.

Reflecting

Teachers and children reflect on learning experiences, using feedback to shape next steps and future learning opportunities

Children are assessed during real learning moments, while they play, build, imagine, ask questions, tell stories and solve problems. Educators
observe closely, listen carefully and document thoughtfully, building a holistic picture of each child’s development.

  • Children as active participants in assessment
Assessment at Chughtai International is something children take part in, not something done to them. Children are encouraged to select pieces for their portfolios, talk about what they have learned and celebrate their achievements in simple, age-appropriate ways. This helps children develop confidence, pride and an early understanding of themselves as capable learners. When additional support is needed, teachers provide gentle scaffolds such as visual prompts, hands-on materials or guided questions, ensuring every child feels successful and supported. Learning experiences are adapted thoughtfully to meet children where they are.
  • Connected to the IB learner profile
Our assessment practices reflect the attributes and attitudes we value most in young learners.Through observation and documentation, we recognize moments when children demonstrate curiosity, courage, kindness, creativity, reflection and respect. Assessment captures the whole child, not just academic milestones, honoring learning as ocial, emotional and deeply human.
  • Sharing learning with families
Families are valued partners in the learning journey. Progress is shared through portfolio conferences, written reports, regular communication and celebrations of learning. Teachers communicate with care and clarity, sharing observations, examples of work and next steps so families feel informed, confident, and connected. Children’s portfolios,
filled with photographs, artwork, writing samples and reflections, become treasured records of early growth and joyful learning
  • Continuous reflection and improvement
Assessment at Chughtai International is collaborative and reflective. Teachers meet regularly to review progress, exchange insights and refine learning pathways. School leadership supports this process through professional learning, coaching and reflection, ensuring assessment remains developmentally appropriate, aligned with IB philosophy, and grounded in play-based inquiry.
  • Our commitment
Every child deserves to feel seen, understood, and celebrated. At Chughtai International School, assessment is a gentle lens that highlights potential rather than a measure that limits it. Through observation, documentation, dialogue and reflection, we honor each child’s growth, identity, and emerging agency, ensuring learning remains joyful, meaningful and full of possibility.
